 WHY……….  Forewarning makes the pt: more tolerant of the problems.  Explanations provided after problems develop often are interpreted as excuses by the dentist.

Individuality of pt: Make Pt: must realize that their physical, mental,& the oral condition are individual in nature. Therefore, one pt: can not compare their progress of new denture to others. Adaptability to new dentures reduces with the progress of age.

APPEARANCE WITH NEW DENTURES Initially dentures may feel strange & bulky in mouth. Lips do not get adapted to newer denture initially. Muscle tension cause awkward appearance. As pt: get relaxed & confident the muscles get relaxed & fullness improves as well. Facial changes in pts transiting from partial to completely edentulous state are so gradual that family & friends are not aware of it. Restoration with CDs restore those changes to normality however this looks awkward B/c its sudden in nature.

MASTICATION WITH NEW DENTURES Pt are instructed to: Not to open the mouth too wide when placing the food inside. Cut the food in small pieces before placing it in mouth. Incision is not advised. Bite bilaterally on premolars Avoid sticky food.

SPEAKING WITH NEW DENTURE Usually the problem with speech is temporary, adaptability of tongue to new denture make pt master of of speech within few weeks. Tooth position problem can be compensated by adaptability of tongue. Bulk over the palatal contour would cause long lasting speech impediment. Pt: should be advised to read aloud & repeat words or phrases that are difficult to pronounce.

Care of dentures Prevention of drying. Prevention of fracture. Avoid hot water

TISSUE HEALTH MAITANENCE Leaving the denture out of the mouth at night. Stimulate the tissues keratinization by finger or brush massage. Brush the tongue.

DENTURE HYGIENE Dentures can be kept clean by combining following methods 1.Manual cleansing: Use soft brush with mild detergent. Never brush the tissue surface. Brush the denture over the basin. Tooth paste with abrasives is contraindicated.

DENTURE HYGIENE Chemical cleansers: Soak the denture in solution which is usually a house hold bleach( sodium hypoclorite) for 15min: or over night. Denture should be clean before soaping it into solution.

DENTURE HYGIENE Sonic cleanser: Use vibratory energy to clean the denture. In combination to hypoclorite it is very effective. removes calculus & cigarette stains effectively
