The Amazing Bald Eagle By Evan Perona

Bald Eagle Basics Bald eagles are vertebrates because they have a backbone. Another reason is because they are birds and birds are a part of the vertebrate group. All birds including the bald eagle are warm blooded. Bald eagles have nearly 7,000 feathers. Those feathers help it to stay warm during winter. They are very flexible and help it to fly.

Bald Eagle Diet Bald eagles love fish. When fish are not available, they eat whatever they can find including small birds, rodents and dead meat . Bald eagles have no problem stealing food from other birds! They also have a large yellow beak that can tear apart prey.

Bald Eagle Habitat Bald eagles mostly live in North America, including Canada, all of the continental United States and northern Mexico. They prefer to live up in high trees and very close to lakes. But during the summer, they can be seen soaring in mid air! Beginning in the fall months, they usually migrate to the coast or large rivers near dams, where the water is not frozen.

Fun Facts! Bald eagles call to each other with a high pitched whistle or chirp. The bald eagle is the symbol of the United States of America. They are called bald eagles because they have white heads that look like they are shaved.

Bald Eagle Families Bald eagles have families just like us that include a male, a female, but the most important part of the family are the babies. It takes 22 days for the egg to hatch. When they hatch, the babies are called eaglets. The mother and father train the eaglet how to hunt prey and fly.
