DANCING By Erin Farquharson

STYLES  Hip Hop- Hip Hop is a very difficult style of dance like many others. This style of dance is one of the main dances you can learn and it helps with other dance styles like jazz. In hip hop you use runners or jazz runners.

STYLES  Ballet- Ballet is a very controlled style of dance. Ballet uses lots of technique and it helps with all other dances technique wise. This dance can be slow or fast and it uses instrumental pieces most of the time. The typical shoes used for Ballet is and ballet shoes or pointe shoes ( pointe shoes are only for girls).

STYLES  Jazz- Jazz is a modern style dance that is very styled. Jazz is very upbeat and costumes are usually quite sparkly and colourful. The shoes you would use for jazz are jazz shoes which come in black or tan and either have laces or elastic.

STYLES  Tap- Tap is also quite an upbeat dance that has been around for a long time. This dance style is still done how it was long ago but has also been modernised. Tap is a lot like jazz but you make a rhythmic noise with your feet creating music. Tap shoes have laces for boys and buckles for girls and they are usually tan or black.

STYLES  Contemporary- Contemporary tells a story in its movement. The music used in this dance has unpredictable changes in rhythm. Contemporary uses very strong controlled leg work and improvisation characteristic of modern dance. The dance shoe used are called “foot undeez”

STYLES  The styles of dance just shown are the main dances that help with things like jazz tap or ball room. Ballet helps mostly with technique and control, Hip-Hop helps with isolations and strength, tap helps with keeping the time and rhythm, jazz helps with style and technique and contemporary helps with control and improvisation.

PERFORMANCES  During a dance performance you need to be full of energy and know your dance extremely well. Usually if you go to a dance school you will have a concert.  Before a concert you need a lot of rest, to stay hydrated and to eat healthy you can be your best. For a concert or performance your hair has to be tied tightly back with a wig or curled. A lot of the time you will have a costume that is brightly coloured and suits the dance.

WHY DANCE  Dancing is a great way to keep fit and have fun. There are many styles you can choose from as you saw in the previous slides. It may not be your cup of tea but at least give it a try.
