We are the keepers of their stories 23 May 2007 National Museum of the United States Air Force ™ ™ CURRENT PROJECTS AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM Charles D. Metcalf, Maj Gen USAF (Ret.) NMUSAF/CL x336 WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB COMMUNITY FORUM

Space Gallery Museum’s space collection growing; dedicated gallery space needed to properly and effectively exhibit these unique artifacts FACILITY UPGRADES

Space Gallery will house: –Mercury, Gemini and Apollo 15 spacecraft –Titan IV Space Launch Vehicle –C-119 for Discoverer spacecraft –Overhead Reconnaissance Vehicles –Space Shuttle –Proposed legislation in draft for consideration Titan IV Space Launch Vehicle FACILITY UPGRADES

Acquiring Space Shuttle Orbiter Shuttles to be retired by September 2010 Atlantis will complete Hubble mission in 2008; then to storage until 2010 Formal request letter sent by SAF/US to NASA Director Pacing item: ability to house NEW ACQUISITION Late ’08 or early ’09 facility completion NASA disposal planning staff have contacted NMUSAF to determine our capability to “demil”

Presidential Gallery Security restrictions at current location limit accessibility to 8% of total visitors New gallery will provide better access and more aesthetically appealing exhibit space for Presidential collection of 9 aircraft Presidential Gallery Space Gallery FACILITY UPGRADES

Other Large Aircraft Number of significant and large aircraft are outside or awaiting delivery  C-5  C-141 Presidential Gallery Other large aircraft FACILITY UPGRADES Space Gallery  KC-135  VC-9

Executive Order 13148, “Greening the Government Through Leadership in Environmental Management” −LEED rating system is Air Force and preferred self assessment metric −Future projects to incorporate sustainable development −Create high performance building with long term value −Museums consume vast amounts of energy  2 nd largest item in NMUSAF budget  Significant savings potential ENERGY CONSERVATION INITIATIVE

Three phase approach to dramatically reduce energy consumption 1.Quick reduction of current energy consumption  Department of Energy (DoE) contractor on board  Areas for review: oBoiler and chiller improvements oHVAC system oEnergy management control system oLighting oChilled/hot water and steam distribution oElectric motors and drivers oRefrigeration oEnergy/utility distribution system oWater/sewer conservation system oEnergy load sharing ENERGY CONSERVATION INITIATIVE

2.Incorporate newer technologies and energy initiatives into new gallery construction  Geothermal heating and cooling  Photovoltaic cell electricity production  NMUSAF incorporating results of above into new building 3.Retrofitting existing buildings to allow for use of 1 & 2 into current museum buildings Geothermal pumps in use at the Century Center building in Grand Forks, North Dakota Rows of photovoltaic cells making up a solar panel ENERGY CONSERVATION INITIATIVE

Working Group in place: Air Force/A4, Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC), 88 th Air Base Wing, DoE, DoD DUSD (I&E)
