Charles Dickens is one of the greatest English writers. He was born near Portsmouth, in the south of England, on 7th February Charles Dickens died on 9th June He was 58 years old. Dickens in buried in the famous church, Westminster Abbey, in London.
Due to industrialisation many poor people could not get work. Men, women and children often became criminals. They stole food and clothes. Sometimes they killed people to get money. If a family could not pay their bills, they had to go to prison. The prisons in Britain in the nineteenth century were the worst in Europe.

The Spirit is a jolly giant who wears a green robe that is bordered with white fur. The garment is loose and leaves his chest and feet bare. He has a wreath of holly upon his head and long, free, dark brown curls. He has sparkling eyes and a cherry voice and he holds a scabbard without a sword.

They are a poor family but they still celebrate Christmas. They are better off than Scrooge. GO BACK
Every man on board, walking or sleeping, good or bad, had a kinder word for one another on that day than on any day in the year. The lonely men near the lighthouse were still making merry despite their condition. The family of miners, though they were not rich, they were celebrating. They were happier than Scrooge. GO BACK
