Presentation transcript:

6:00 – 6:25 Welcome in the Commons Teachers are encouraged to finalize preparations in your rooms 6:35 The bell will ring signaling the start of 1 st period Parents will visit their student’s classrooms for 10 minute “periods.” 5 minute passing periods 8:00 An announcement will be made concluding the evening.

Educational background/Teaching philosophy In a nutshell, perhaps there's a compelling tidbit or brief personal story that brought them to teaching. Most teachers do this already and it is very impressive to parents to know about Masters and Doctorate degrees, special certifications, recognition/award, etc. which brings the presentation to a more professional level. If a teacher works or volunteers outside of school to enhance and enrich their teaching and subject area, mention this also. For example, we know many of our staff have earned fellowships to Fred Hutch, attend conferences, won special grants and travel to bring fresh perspective and skills back to the classroom.

Show teacher's website and how to navigate it. So important! Teachers need to be encouraged to have a working and up-to-date website. Many times the questions parents have take place after school hours and could be answered through a thorough website. The teacher website is a tool provided by the district and is instrumental in the communication process between the teachers, students, and parents.

Communication: Teacher Contact Info Ways to reach teacher and what time of day are they available for phone calls - before/after school, planning period. Teacher response time (w/in hrs is reasonable) Encourage student advocating for themselves Encourage positive communication in addition to contact only when there is a concern (teacher, student, and parent). We all like to receive compliments and pats on the back for a job well done.

Intervention: When is teacher available outside of class to meet with students? What to do when a student is falling behind?  Collaboration between student - teacher - parent?  Strategies, plan

Assignments: Posted on website? Written on the board? Time provided for students to record in planners? Grading policy - formative and summative Make ups for homework, quizzes, tests Late policy Enrichment opportunities

A Couple More: College in the High School credit? How does it work? Advantages? Use of electronic devices:  Textbooks - leave at school? Bring it daily?  Online copy?

Presentation: Projecting the teacher website or a power point is quite useful especially for meeting multiple modalities fo the audience. POST the ppt on the teacher's website for follow up reference for parents and students. This is also a valuable reference tool for parents who were unable to attend Curriculum Night and anyone enrolling afterward. Teachers should avoid reciting the power point as it hampers the delivery of their own voice and personality.
