Cohort of Associate Professors Program oWhen expanded from research universities to teaching institutions: CAPP-R: Research University CAPP-E: Education oHave now added research labs... Cohort of Advanced Professionals Program CAPP-L: Research Labs (industry & gov’t) 2

CAPP Organization o2008 is the –4th Year of CAPP-R –2nd Year of CAPP-E –1st Year of CAPP-L oAll groups have similar needs, but also differences oOrganized as three tracks oImportant for groups to interact oFunded by NSF ADVANCE Grant, IBM, private foundation oOne workshop every two years oFollow up activities 3

Why are there so many women in Molecular Biology? “There were great female founders in the field in the early 20th century who inspired generations of women, creating opportunities for women to thrive and reach National Academy of Sciences status. These were role models, catalysts." -- Shirley M. Tilghman, President of Princeton Where is the "female factor” in CS? It’s here! It’s us! 5

CAPP Goal oToday women hold 26% of all (non-tenure track) instructor positions but only 11% of the full professorships ! (Taulbee Survey 2007) oCAPP GOAL: Increase the number of women who are promoted to full professor and/or reach the top of the technical ladder and serve in leadership roles in the CS community. 6

What about women in teaching institutions? oBelieved similar, but data less available 10

Research Labs oWhat are the stats at research labs? –Anecdotally, about the same. –But, we don’t have hard numbers. oUnclear how to get them. 11
