Emotional Characteristics of Musical Instruments Goal: To determine the relationship between music emotion and sound colors. In particular, how emotional characteristics of the piano and other instruments vary with pitch and dynamics.
Listening Test: – –24 piano tones 8 pitches (c1-8: low to high) 3 dynamic levels (loud, medium, and soft) – –10 emotional categories (e.g., Comic, Happy…). – –Listeners judged all pairwise combinations of tones: “Which is more Comic, 1 or 2?” Larger values indicate pitches and dynamic levels that were significantly more Comic than others (23 is maximum).
