Presentation transcript:

The Initial Problem Chapter 1, Section 1.6 #71 x = 793 x needs to be isolated on the left. Therefore, 341 should be subtracted from both sides: x = x = 452

Examples of responses The next three examples assume that the problem was correctly answered as it was on the last slide.

A check of a classmate’s problem by showing its correctness I have found your answer to be correct. I can check the problem by substituting the answer 452 back in the beginning of the problem for x = = 793 The answer checks.

Showing an alternative way to accurately solve the problem Another way to think about this problem when solving it is to include the additive inverse (the opposite of the operation). In this case, I need to find the additive inverse of 341. Since 341 is positive 341, I know the additive inverse would be Therefore, I would use this to cancel out the 341 on the left and to subtract from 793. The solution would be x = 452.

Provides an additional problem that reinforces the same concept Your answer was correct. Another problem like this one that I have solved is: x – 34 = 65 x – = (add 34 to both sides to isolate x) x = 99 The difference between your problem and the problem I chose was that subtraction was involved instead of addition to isolate the variable. However, the concept is still the same. I can also check this problem by inputting the 99 back in the original problem for the variable. Check: = = 65 The answer checks.

Examples of responses For the next example, the assumption is that the problem was answered incorrectly like this: x = 793 x needs to be isolated on the left. Therefore, 341 should be added to both sides: x = x = 1134

Recognizing an incorrect step to the solution and providing the correction You have the right idea that the problem needs to isolate x on the left side. For this to happen, you would need to subtract 341 from both sides rather than add it. In your second step when you have, x = The next step would be: x = 1134 if you add. If you subtract, then you would have: x = x = 452

Examples of responses that do not meet the requirements You did a great job with this problem. I would have solved it the same way. (then explanation of the same way to solve it is shared here). You have a good understanding of this problem. I am having a difficult time with the problems like this. You solved this one correctly. Can you solve this problem? (insert a problem here). How did you solve this problem again? I do not understand this problem.

Using MML In each unit, there are Practice Problems located under the MML Tutorial Practice link in the MML Ungraded Tutorials link. This will be thekey to your success in this course in the quizzes, the DB, the projects and the Final Exam. There are quite a few features available: –Help Me Solve This –Show me an example –Textbook –Ask My Instructor

What students say about MML I would say to every student that takes this course that the MML is an invaluable tool something you cannot afford to do without. I was a blank page so to speak coming into this. I had not worked with math in such a long time I had forgotten most of the things learned and that gave me a frightening, sickening feeling. However, the MML affords you the opportunity to get some practice in and it does not matter if you make mistakes you do so many of the same problems repeatedly that it becomes second nature and you get the hang of it. It walks you through what you do not understand. If I can do it, trust that anyone who really wants to learn can do it. :)

What students say about MML My experience using the MML practice helped me to pass the course. I did not use it right away because I did not think it was necessary. The weeks that I did not use the lab are the weeks that I struggled with the concepts. Because of this tool I was able to meet the challenge of passing this course with a higher grade than I anticipated. Use it, it will make a difference in your grade. It motivated me to keep going and besides, do you want to repeat math?

What students say about MML The M.M.L tutorials are a great tool that along with working with the tutors, allowed me to achieve great success. The M.M.L Tutorials break down the problems in a way you can understand them and allows you many different ways to grasp the concepts needed to complete each problem and during each lesson when you get confused or you are struggling you can go into the M.M.L tutorials and look at several problems similar to the ones you may be working. Use the help me solve this key which will show you step by step how the problem should be worked to get the correct answer. It is great practice. It helped me a lot. Math is not my best subject but the M.M.L tutorials are a great tool in the learning process pertaining to math and I strongly recommend using it to better understand concepts and problems to be worked in any math class if offered by the teacher.
