Beliefs Friday Class 9:30 am and 11:00 am

The Question What is a Belief? -Beliefs are the specific opinions you have about Yourself and particular people, situations, things or ideas. In other words, beliefs are the specific attitudes that arise from YOUR VALUES. Ex. When I was a child EDUCATION was a non negotiable in my household. Each child was expected to go to high school and then to attend and graduate from college. The expectation is the same for my own children because of the VALUES that were ingrained in me by my grandmothers.

The Fox and the Grapes Let’s hear the short story (Student) Pg. 18, Reaching your Potential By Throop and Castellucci – What influenced the foxes behavior? – 1. – 2. – What action does the fox take to obtain the grapes? – 1. – 2.

Belief vs. Behavior Your beliefs and other peoples beliefs about you-both positive and negative- have a powerful influence on how you behave. My oldest son and I (the story behind the picture)

Mental Garbage Each person has the potential to live a SUCCESSFUL and HAPPY LIFE. Yet most of us fall short of that ideal because we are carrying a bag of “MENTAL GARBAGE” that weights us down. Thus “garbage” is NEGATIVE beliefs about ourselves. – Activity (Post it) What are some examples of mental garbage that you have heard? Write it on your post it note Place them on the wall (Row by row) We are NOT DEFINED BY FAILURES. BUT, WE USE THOSE CHALLENGES TO LEARN HOW TO RISE ABOVE AND FLY.

Self Fulfilling Prophecy – Definition A belief that comes true because it is believed whether it is positive or negative. – Ex. I can’t pass Physics » I can’t find a job » I have no chance to get my Associates Degree » I’m going to drop out of school » OR » I will find the money to go to school » I will speak in class even though I’m nervous » I will learn to swim

Positive Beliefs Definition – Enables you to take action and make progress. They give you the license to focus on what you need to do to ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING. The power of enabling beliefs is that they often come true. Because, they give you the SELF CONFIDENCE to PRESIST and SUCCEED. Activity- Red Paper Diaries – Using a marker; Go to the RED PAPER(row by row) and write your POSITIVE BELIEFS. These will be placed in my room for view and daily inspiration for all students. These are your words reflecting on how you see yourselves and your future.

Others Affecting Your Beliefs Your beliefs about yourself, both positive and negative are influenced by the people around you. Family, friends, coworkers and acquaintances. Pg.21 Whatever it takes The Three Doctors – (The Three Doctors)

Activity ( Power of Other People’s Beliefs) Think about a time when another person’s opinion of you influenced your thoughts or actions. Then recall a time when your opinion of someone else changed what that person thought or did. Describe a time when someone’s opinion of you influenced your thoughts or actions. ______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________. Describe a time when your opinion of someone changed that person’s thoughts or actions _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________.

No one can persuade another to change. Each of us guards a gate of change that can only be opened from the inside Marilyn Ferguson, American Poet Thank you all for your time and attention. Have a great day!!!!!!!!!!
