Presentation transcript:

Kibera, Kenya: a case study In today’s lesson you are going to put together everything you have learnt about global urban growth, the problems it creates in LEDCs & how these are being tackled. On the following slides are a number of resources to use relating to Kibera, the largest shanty town in Africa, located in Kenya.

Your task: Read the resources & watch the short films. Produce a document (PowerPoint perhaps?) to show the following: Where is Kibera & what are its key characteristics (population size, areal extent etc) What are living conditions like here –housing, sanitation, infrastructure etc? How are these issues being tackled? Evaluate the solutions you identify.

Where do you find shanty towns? What are the problems and how can they be improved? Urban landuse The central business district (CBD) is at the centre The better quality housing is around it - access to shops, cinemas, banks, offices. More good housing takes the best land - along a hillside or close to a beautiful view/park. Industry tends to develop in wedges along the main routes to the city. Older shanties have since been upgraded & have most essential services, e.g., clean water, sanitation & roads.
