Supervising and instructing the Doctoral Student - What is new ? The roles of Supervisor and Instructor have been clarified Each Doctoral Student should have both Supervisor and Instructor, sometimes the can be the same person Each Supervisor should have a limited number of doctoral students (around 6 full time students) The Guidelines : Tohtorikoulutettavan ohjaus Aalto- yliopistossa The Plan for Instructing/Ohjaussuunnitema

What do the Guidelines say ? The Supervisor is responsible on –organizing the supervising and instruction of the student deciding about the tasks of Supervisor and Instructor in each case –supporting the finding of funding for the research work –encouraging reserach and guiding in critical scientific thinking –encouraging, supporting and guiding publishing –checking the study plan and following the studies –discussions on the study plan, at least once a year –informing the student about ethics and other good practices in research, ethics and immaterial rights –ensuring that the student is aware of the processes of preliminary examination, doctoral defence and the requirem. of doctoral thesis –ensuring that the student makes the improvements suggested by the preliminary examiners to the thesis manuscript –coaching and career planning.

The doctoral student is responsible on –making a study plan together with the supervisor –discussing with the supervisor on the researh topic, goals and objectives, contents and schedules –learn the ethcis of research and also follow the good practices of research –independently make the research and publish on the results –teach topics of his/her research field –try to find funding for the reserach together with the supervisor –report regularly on the results of the research to the supervisor –let the supervisor know about any changes in the plan –register annually as a doctoral student

Why The Instructing Plan ? In order to guarantee –The quality of the research work –The realization of the planned schedule –The equal support of all students The core contents of the agreement –Responsibilities, rights and duties of all parties

Supervisor, instructor, doctoral student -instructing -organizing the funding -supporting -controlling workload -thesis requirem. -registered students -progressing students -reporting students -instructing the scientific research MEETINGS

What this means in practice ? What should we do differently ? How much of our resources we should plan for one doctoral student per year ? Is the Plan only a new task to be done, or can it help and support our work? Discussion in small groups Discussion results presentation
