Bespoke collaboration: Supporting the development of HE colleagues working with the school workforce

Offering models for action-based learning opportunities

Developing broadened partnerships with schools To provide opportunities for HEI staff and school staff to undertake collaborative research with impact To build a community of practice and learning between university and school To seize the opportunity to make a real difference in childrens lives on the basis of local need To foreground teacher education for school SMT To model rigorous research practices in schools To generate more and better quality PGCE placements

Approaching the school: does the school have… A group of young people who need tailored support…? A specific area targeted for development…? Something youd like to research…? An issue linked with the SIP…?

Project 1: Literacy in a PRU/FE college Context: a PRU offering FE courses; a new appointment for staff development Focus: to embed literacy throughout the college Plan: Literacy triage + one-to-one support for pupils (PGCE students) CPD for teachers Embedding literacy throughout the curriculum: PGCE students to support development of materials and resources Written up as a research paper Learning: To develop a bespoke CPD package with a school Connecting school-based practice with research with impact

Project 2: Vulnerable girls in two schools Context: neighbouring and rival schools in a disadvantaged area; a history of girls vulnerability to exploitation and violence Focus: Building on an established project, to support PGCE students to mentor a group of vulnerable girls and support them through their GCSE year Plan: Group and social activities to build community One-to-one mentoring Academic support with coursework and homework Written up as a research paper Learning: Networking across schools to build links with the local authority Research with impact

Project 3: The Illuminate Young Researchers Project Context: An improving school with new management in a disadvantaged area Focus: Building on an established project, an action research project on the development of cultural capital (for example, widening participation in higher education) Plan: Train 6-9 young people + staff (inc PGCE students) in research methods Support the development of research questions and methodology: a research plan Supervise the research teams to carry out investigation and analysis over a term (PGCE students supervise and support access) Develop the findings into teacher CPD Written up as a research paper Special benefits: pupil voice; the development of self-advocacy skills; direct link with SIP, drawing in SMT; AimHigher/Widening Participation agenda and funding opportunities Learning: All about SIPs Linking PGCE student learning with research

Funding Some projects fall within normal PGCE budgeting and are at no cost to schools Small bits of research/alumni funding can be applied for, leading to potential for more Where a cost is implied, HEI to collaborate with schools on applying for research funding to undertake project as a piece of action research

Any questions? Tel
