PRACTICING TIPS

Tips for the string student and parent Location Consistent time of day Reasons for practicing every day Having the right materials Use of strategies Parental involvement

LOCATION Choose a location that is conducive to practice - this might be a bedroom or another room in the house that does not have manydistractions. This room might also have the following within easy access: piano, CD player, computer, mirror. Consider noise a factor when choosing a location as well.

CONSISTENT TIME OF DAY One very important aspect of good practice is to practice at a consistent time every day; however, the student needs to be able to look at his/her week and be able to determine the best time he/she should practice based upon extracurricular activities and/or homework load. Most importantly: PLAN AHEAD!

Reasons for Practicing Muscle MemoryMuscle Endurance Practice Time Meeting Goals Mastering Organization and Patterns

Having the Right Materials Important Items: – Book(s) – Properly working instrument – Accessories such as: rosin, cleaning cloth, rock stop, extra strings, reeds, valve oil, slide grease, etc. – Music stand (for home practice) – Pencil Other items to consider: – Metronome – Computer – Computer program such as Smart Music – Piano – Tuner

Use of Strategies Begin practice session with a warm-up Quality vs. Quantity Repetition Start slow and gradually increase tempo Parts vs. the whole Always practice with good posture Use other aspects of practice in conjunction with the above, i.e., location, time of day, etc.

Parental/Family Involvement Encouragement Providing necessary items for child Helping child structure practice time Being involved
