Lesson 19 Procrastination3 /media/action/yt/watch?videoId=7 DPunwdtUR8&name=Procrastinati on&uploadUsername=jennxpenn& hitCount=376395

Lesson 19 Procrastination4 Procrastination Begins as a… 1. Strategy for coping with difficult circumstances at home or school. 2. Distraction from unpleasant tasks or tasks that make a student nervous. 3. Control mechanism to break the rules in an environment where they are not in control. 4. Challenge because the student is otherwise bored with class or schoolwork. 5. Easy way out because the student learned there were no serious consequences. 6. Protection from being labeled “stupid.” (Peer pressure) 7. Protection from being labeled “smart.”

Lesson 19 Procrastination5 How Do I Procrastinate I work on anything less important. I become obsessed with cleaning. I work or play with my hobbies. I go workout. I play any sport or game. I just sit and stare. I listen to music. I watch a movies or TV programs. I play video games. I read. I nap or sleep. I play with my pets. I doodle great works of art. I go shopping. I talk others into procrastinating or let others talk me into it!

Lesson 19 Procrastination6 Causes of Procrastination 1.Thinking Patterns - Perfectionism Inadequacy Discomfort 2.Behavioral Patterns- Procrastination can be a vicious cycle! START I’ll start early this time… I’ve got to start soon… What if I don’t do this? There is still time… Is there something wrong with me? To do or not to do… I’ll never procrastinate again!

Lesson 19 Procrastination7 Consequences External -- Loss of money, grants or loans -- Loss of friendships or significant others -- Lowered grades -- Incomplete academic programs -- Tension with parents -- Fees, fines, and warrants -- Conflict with teachers and administrators Internal -- Self-criticism -- Embarrassment -- Anxiety -- Lack of concentration -- Guilt -- Physical exhaustion or illness -- Inability to enjoy other classes or activities

Lesson 19 Procrastination8 Strategies to Fight Procrastination Use “WASPS” W – Weigh benefits of completing the task vs. procrastinating to you and to others. (If it is helpful, make a list of how you will feel as a result.) A – Analyze the task and break it apart into periods of time that are doable for you. (If you need to, plan for min. segments.) S – Set reasonable goals with deadlines. (You may want to write out an intention statement with a reward upon completion.) P – Plan ahead; implement your tasks and goals into your daily/weekly schedule. (Schedule for unanticipated events and some play time.) S – Start NOW and learn to Say NO!

Lesson 19 Procrastination9 Helpful Tips Accept procrastination as normal. Be realistic; don’t expect perfection. Think positively. Keep yourself accountable by telling others. Ask for help. Set physical reminders. Study at the time of day you are most effective and in a location that is not distracting.
