Drafting and Communicating The Universal Language of Industry

Sharing Ideas Communication – Sending and receiving information, messages, or ideas. Graphic communication - Sending and receiving information, messages, or ideas through the use of graphs, charts, illustrations, drawings, or pictures. Drafting – Form of graphic communication, which is universally understood in industrial fields. Design – Plan for a device or product. The process of design begins with defining the problem. It also involves gather information, developing, testing, and finding solutions.

Communication Model SENDER MESSAGE INFORMATION IDEAS RECEIVER FEEDBACK INTERFERENCE

Design “Design is the planned process of change. Instead of something changing by accident, design demands that we plan change so we end up with the results we want. It also means that we attempt to minimize trade-offs and control risk. TECHNOLOGY is all about design.” Design and Problem Solving in Technology John Hutchinson & John Karsnitz Delmar Publishing Inc., 1994

CO 2 Dragster Design Points ( Page 1 of the Packet) Thumbnails 30 points - 8 drawings that will illustrate different ideas you have in the design of your vehicle Rough Renderings 30 points - 3 drawings to filter down the many ideas of the dragster Final Drawing 100 points - The final idea. This will be the vehicle you will make.  30 dimensions points  20 neatness points  20 accuracy points  20 design aspects points  10 centered points

CO 2 Dragster Fabrication Points Final Product 100 points - The vehicle you make for the racing competition 30 accuracy 40 craftsmanship 30 finishing (unfinished dragsters will receive a.3 second deduction in recorded time) Race Day 45 points - The competition where the sponsor’s will choose the design of the fastest dragster. Dragsters will receive a.2 second deduction in time for every 1/8” the dragster is out of the specified range. Durability 30 points - The dragster must be intact after each race.

5 Step Problems Solving Model 1. Recognize and define the Problem 2. Consider Possible Solutions 3. Develop a Plan 4. Activate the Plan 5. Evaluate the Plan

Recognize and define the Problem When defining the problem, consider the boundaries, the parameters, and the limitations. A very narrow, well defined, specific problem will be easier to solve than a board, all encompassing generation. Think about what has been discussed in class including the limitations of the dragster. In the space provided below write a definition for the design problem presented to you.

Consider Possible Solutions To accomplish this step, gather as much data and information as possible. Use brainstorming techniques (thumbnail sketches) to come up with ideas. At this point everything goes – be creative – be resourceful—go for it!

Develop a Plan Use your best information. Make sure it will solve the problem completely. Have all the limitations of the vehicle been addressed?

Activate the Plan Perform the action, build and test a prototype; build and race your dragster.

Evaluate the Plan You are finished with the process if you are happy with the results. However, if your evaluation has room for improvement, What should be changed? Can the plan be salvaged? Would other solutions work better? Which step in the problem – solving model do you need to go back to?

CO2 Dragster Design Defining the Problem

Defining Your Design Problems Recognize and define the Problem – When defining the problem, consider the boundaries, the parameters, and the limitations. A very narrow, well defined, specific problem will be easier to solve than a board, all encompassing generation. Think about what has been discussed in class including the limitations of the dragster. In the space provided below write a definition for the design problem presented to you. Requirement: You must write a short statement (in full sentences) that best defines your tasks.

CO 2 Considerations and Parameters Designing and producing a CO 2 Dragster Speed (the faster the CO 2 Dragster is the more points you receive) Finishing (Two or more colors) Durability (CO 2 Dragster must stay intact for two races) Limitations (You must design your CO 2 Dragster around the parameters on Page 5 of the packet)

Definitions In complete sentences, write a paragraph that address these 5 considerations. (3 – 5 sentences) Designing and producing a CO 2 Dragster Speed (the faster the CO 2 Dragster is the more points you receive) Finishing (Two or more colors) Durability (CO 2 Dragster must stay intact for two races) Limitations (You must design your CO 2 Dragster around the parameters on Page 5 of the packet.
