1 IPv6 Deployment Monitoring Kamal Ahmed 7 July 2010

IPv6 deployment monitoring 2 Objectives Action plan Measurement results Future activities Contents

IPv6 deployment monitoring 3 Measure the number of IPv6 enabled users Conduct IPv6 measurement campaigns for Europe in 2009 and 2010 Assess global deployment, quality and security of current IPv6 products and services – survey & interviews Disseminate the results ( Objectives

IPv6 deployment monitoring 4 Action Plan 2008 states that by the end of 2010: 25% of users are able to connect to the IPv6 internet and so are able to access their most important content and service providers without noticing a major difference compared to IPv4 Determine: The fraction of users that can access the IPv6 internet compared to the number of users that can access the IPv4 internet. This will be referred to as metric U (Users). The fraction of most important websites that can be accessed using the IPv6 internet compared to the IPv4 internet. This will be referred to as metric C (Capable). Action Plan

IPv6 deployment monitoring 5 Simultaneously Have webmasters place a script on their website that causes end users to connect to a TNO server. Measurement methodology: factor U (Users) web browser 1. http request IPv4/IPv6 webpage with TNO JAVA script 2. JAVA script HTTP/PHP server MySQL server and logging tool web server end user 3. PHP call TNO IP monitoring server: - ipv4.test.ipv6monitoring.eu - ipv6.test.ipv6monitoring.eu - ipv4v6.test.ipv6monitoring.eu PHP call via -IPv4 only -IPv6 only -dual stack

IPv6 deployment monitoring 6 Use ALEXA top 500 most popular websites per member state Per member state: measure IPv6 reachability of these sites Total of web sites used. Measurement methodology: factor C (content)

IPv6 deployment monitoring 7 Measurement results: factor U Average of uptake ~ 2% – 4%: far below 25% target!

IPv6 deployment monitoring 8 Measurement results: factor C 0! Number of websites of top 500 per country reachable on IPv6 (total of websites analyzed)

IPv6 deployment monitoring 9 Survey results source: TNO/GNKS 2009 IPv6 traffic is insignificant IPv6 traffic is less than IPv4 traffic IPv6 traffic is same as IPv4 traffic IPv6 traffic is greater than IPv4 traffic RIPEAPNIC

IPv6 deployment monitoring 10 Future activities (1/2): measurement approach Increase number of participants Selection of websites: Participation of EU and TNO and GNKS NDA with RIPE NCC agreed: sharing of measurement results. Invitation to RIPE NCC’s members to participate Global ipv6 Survey among members of RIPE NCC, APNIC, ARIN, AfriNIC and LACNIC. Analysis of results and comparison with 2009 survey.
