The setting in the end of the book is in the mekong delta and the navy there is called the brown water navy because it is along the jungle and the water is brown.

plot THE PLOT of this story IS four friends who end up in vietnam because of a friendship oath they made during middle school. The oath was that if one of them was drafted into the war they would all go to protect each other and stay together.

problem Morris and his three friends are separated during Vietnam because they are in different branches of the service. Morris tries to contact his friend ivan by radio phone but can’t reach him.

solution During morris’ second tour he gets letters from his friends beck and Rudi. Finally he reaches his friend ivan on the radio phone during a typhoon.

SUMMARY The main character morris had a bad dream about him and his friends being hurt in the military. Morris and his 3 best friends made an oath when they were in middle school to all join the military if any of them were drafted so they would all protect each other. As they grew up they always hung out and did everything together.

SUMMARY Since rudi was the oldest of the friends, because he was held back in school, he was drafted into the marines before anyone else. To keep the oath, morris and his other two friends joined other branches of the service. Morris started out in the navy as an Aviation electrician’s mate third class (ae3).

SUMMARY While morris was in the navy he got letters from two of his friends, but never got a letter from ivan, so he was worried about him. After serving some time he got to go back home and spend time with his mother. Right before he went to bed he had a feeling there was a reason to go back to the uss boston.

SUMMARY not long after he was called back. When he got there he was reassigned to the Riverine assault force vessel with the jobs of Communications officer and Midship terret gunner. While on this vessel they were involved in combat. While he was still on the vessel there was a typhoon. During the typhoon he was finally able to communicate with ivan BY RADIO PHONE and he was fine.
