Discourse 1: Sermon on the Mount Summary of Jesus' teaching Being blessed (5:1-20) Fulfillment of the OT (5:21-48) Christian “pillars of Judaism” (6:1-18) Trust in God (6:19-34) Judging (7:1-6) Gaining eternal life (7:7-14) False teachers (7:15-23) Following Christ’s teachings (7:24-27) People recognize Jesus' authority (7:28-29) Chapters 5-7 Jesus had preached before; Matthew chose this sermon (perhaps pulling from other sermons as well) to introduce Jesus’ teaching

The commission is part of Jesus’ larger mission.

Faith moves from following but misunderstanding (feeding 5000, walking on water) to understanding and open declaration (Peter’s confession). This culminates in transfiguration, but remaining willingly submissive (temple tax) The fact that the disciples move from misunderstanding to understanding indicates that they are the focus of the passage.
