SEEKING FOR COOPERATION HCU - RESEARCH MEETING ( ): PUBLIC PARTICIPATION Samo Drobne Uni. of Ljubljana, Fac. of Civil and Geodetic Eng., Slovenia

Contents  Introduction  Main research topics  … applicability for (functional) urban areas ?  Other research topics  Discussion

University of Ljubljana  More than 63,000 graduate and postgraduate students.  App higher education teachers.  22 faculties, 3 arts academies and one university college.

Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering  App graduate students.  App. 300 part-time graduate students.  App. 150 post-graduate students.  App. 120 higher education teachers.  From 2009, three departments:  Dpt. of Civil Engineering  Dpt. of Environmental Civ. Eng.  Dpt. of Geodetic Engineering www2.fgg.uni-lj.si

Dpt. of Geodetic Engineering  Six chairs:  Chair of Geodesy,  Chair of Engineering Surveying,  Chair of Mathematical and Physical Geodesy and Navigation,  Chair of Cartography, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing,  Chair of Geo-Informatics and Real-Estate Cadastres,  Chair of Spatial Planning. geodetic division spatial (information) division

Main research topics  Gravity Models:  inter-country model (Slovenia and Croatia)  inter-regional models  inter-municipal models  Accessibility  modelling accessibility fields  coupling accessibility and gravity approach  Functional (vs. Administrative) region  modelling functional regions

Inter-regional gravity model (GM&DM)  Bogataj M. and S. Drobne (2004): Does the improvement of roads increase the daily commuting? Numerical analysis of Slovenian interregional flows. In: Zadnik Stirn L. et all (Eds.). Selected decision support models for production and public policy problems, (SDI-SOR series, no. 3). Ljubljana.  Inter-regional (a) migration and (b) commuting were analysed for 12 regions in Slovenia (for period ):... by investing in roads, which would improve the time distance by 20 %, daily commuting (DC) could increase up to 70 % on average;... by investing in roads, which would improve the time distance by 20 %, gross migration (GM) would increase by 42 % on average.

Inter-municipal gravity model - 1  Drobne S and M. Bogataj (2005): Intermunicipal gravity model of Slovenia. In: Zadnik Stirn and S. Drobne (Eds.). The 8th International Symposium on Operational Research in Slovenia, Nova Gorica, Slovenia, September 28-30, SOR '05 proceedings. Ljubljana.  Inter-municipal commuting flows were analysed to define the gravity model for Slovenia (2002): Method is applicable for functional urban areas (FUA).

Inter-municipal gravity model - 2

Inter-municipal gravity model decision- makers and citizens can work together to find constructive solutions in the decision making about investments in the infrastructure, municipality growth and development.

Inter-country gravity model  Drobne S., M. Bogataj and L. Bogataj (2006): Spatial interactions influenced by European corridors and the shift of the Schengen border regime. In: Boljunčič V. et all (Eds.). The 11th International Conference on Operational Research, Pula, 27th-29th September, KOI 2006 proceedings. Zagreb.  An extended gravity o model was defined to estimate available human resources due to increased daily migrations between regions in Enlarged Europe and expected New Member Country (Croatia).  The model was improved by waiting lines methodology embedded in time spending distance functions.

Accessibility to centres - 1  Drobne S. et all (2005): Will the future motorway network improve the accessibility to administrative centres in Slovenia? In: Zadnik Stirn and S. Drobne (Eds.). The 8th International Symposium on Operational Research in Slovenia, Nova Gorica, Slovenia, September 28-30, SOR '05 proceedings. Ljubljana.  A two-stage raster-based GIS approach for evaluation of continuous accessibility fields was proposed. Method is applicable for urban areas.  The improvement of accessibility to administrative centres due to new highways and motorways were studied for period

Accessibility to centres - 2 time spending distance dwelling houses population percentage of population minutes % 6 – 10 minutes % minutes % together: %

Accessibility & Gravity model - 1  Drobne S., M. Bogataj and A. Lisec (2008): The Influence of Accessibility to Inter-Regional Commuting Flows in Slovenia. In: Bernard L. (Ed.). Taking Geoinformation Science one step further. Girona, AGILE conference.  The results of the accessibility analysis were embedded in the extended gravity model of inter-regional commuting flows in Slovenia that makes the gravity model more stable and applicable for policy makers. the average time-spending distance to the motorway connections in 2001 in the region

Accessibility & Gravity model - 2 Time-spending distance to motorway connections and public road network in Slovenia in 2001

Functional regions - 1  Drobne S., M. Konjar and A. Lisec (2009): Delimitation of Functional Regions Using Labour Market Approach. To be appeared in: Zadnik Stirn L. et all (Eds.). The 10th International Symposium on Operational Research in Slovenia, Nova Gorica, Slovenia, September 23-25, SOR '09 proceedings. Ljubljana.  Method for delimitation of functional regions by using data for inter-municipal daily commuting of working population was suggested. Method is applicable for functional urban areas (FUA).  The method was tested to analyze how so defined functional regions fit to proposed provinces (administrative regions) in Slovenia: The proposal for six administrative regions in Slovenia is “stronger” than the model of eight ones – there are not eight, but nine functional regions in Slovenia.

Functional regions - 2 Six administrative regions (Eight) Nine administrative regions

Other research  Land market reseach  Drobne S., A. Lisec and M. Bogataj (2008): GIS Analysis of Rural Land Market in Slovenia. In: Bernard L. (Ed.). Taking Geoinformation Science one step further. Girona, AGILE conference.  Drobne S., T. Grilj and A. Lisec (2009): Activity of Real-Estate's Market in Slovenia in To be appeared in Geodetski vestnik, 53(3).  Multi-criteria decision analysis  Drobne S. and A. Lisec (2009): Multi-attribute decision analysis in GIS: Weighted Linear Combination and Ordered Weighted Averaging. To be appeared in Informatica, 33(3).  Polycentric urban development  Zavodnik Lamovsek A., S. Drobne and T. Zaucer (2008): Small and Medium- Size Towns as the Basis of Polycentric Urban Development. Geodetski vestnik, 52(2):
