Vision The University of Pretoria Library Services distinguishes itself as a global leader through redefining academic librarianship

Mission To achieve the vision, the UP Library Services will adopt the "High Tech, High Touch" scenario by focusing on Leadership, Innovation & Technology, Partnerships & Client Services, and Staff Development

Assumptions This is not "in addition" to the normal workings of the Library but rather what drives it! All the actions will be implemented by a Project planning approach Evaluation and measurement of the implemen- tation of the Strategic plan on a regular basis The Strategic plan is flexible and dynamic The Strategic plan is a high-level document that provides a broad strategic framework for further plans and actions

Strategies Leadership 1.Create/strengthen a climate & culture for innovation 2.Establish leadership for innovation 3.Adopt a Project planning approach to optimise our resources & future planning 4.Transition to a conducive physical environment for innovation Innovation & Technology 1.Delivery of new technology-based services 2.Infusion of relevant technologies into client processes Staff Development 1. Continuing Professional Development & Workplace Learning (CPDWL) based on identified skills sets aligned to the strategies Partnerships and Client Services 1. High level integration with Research focus areas 2. Embedded Librarianship 3. Partnering with UP teaching & learning model 4. Client Training For an integration of "High Tech, High Touch", the following strategies must be implemented:

Actions (Planning) Leadership: Leadership training & mentoring for innovation (US – Ujala Satgoor + management/leadership) Carnegie Library Leadership Academies must become self-sustainable (US) Internal leadership development for innovation (US) Understanding and implementation of basic Project planning principles (US) Redefining, redesigning and upgrading of existing space to increase innovation and functionality (RM – Robert Moropa) Measuring the "carbon footprint“ (green library) (RM) Innovation & Technology: Create a Virtual Research Environment (VRE) & implement a research data management service that include Information Specialists involvement (HP – Heila Pienaar, HK – Hilda Kriel + management/leadership); Systematic incorporation of new IT developments in products and services (HP, HK + management/leadership)

Actions (Contd.) Staff Development (relevant professional skills & competencies): Finalisation of the Staff Development Plan (US); Strategic HR management e.g. succession planning, employment processes, promotions & remuneration (RM); Mentoring & Coaching (HK); Up-skilling for a high tech environment (HP); Identification of relevant new skills (US, HK, HP + management/leadership) Partnerships and Client Services: Develop external and internal high level strategic partnerships (RM + all staff) Create multi-disciplinary teams for research focus areas (HK + management/leadership); To explore & implement the concept of Embedded Librarianship (HK + management/leadership); To explore & implement the learning & teaching model of the University (HK + management/leadership); To explore & implement appropriate & relevant client training for a high tech environment (HP, HK + management/leadership) Reconceptualise information literacy (HK + management/leadership) Optimal distribution of staff to ensure equitable services (Library executive)
