Key Highlights from Math Institutes Teacher as Learner Experience of cooperative learning Experience of conceptual learning Teacher as Researcher “Myth Busting” Articles align with the teaching & learning from morning Teacher as Teacher Immediate opportunity to plan implementation of pedagogy and content

Participant Comments Survey Question: Please identify the top 2- 3 criteria you will apply to math problem selection and or generation. “they would involve: 1. allow for student reflection, 2. conceptual understanding, 3. some access to all students and 4. require group effort” “understanding beyond procedural 2. open to multiple problem solving approaches 3. requires thinking and reflection”

Participant Comments Survey Question: In what way, if any, was your learning in the past 3 weeks different from other PD experiences? “it actually involved doing mathematics! Research based w/ research readings to show how it was all connected”

Participant Comments Survey Question: In order for you to successfully implement your IU during the coming school year, what do you need? “success in putting my students in cooperative groups (more professional development on this), co-planning with other teachers”

Participant Comments Survey Question: Has this institute changed your views about how your students can best learn math? “As students engage each other and use adaptive reasoning to justify their reasoning to each other in a CL environment, I now believe that this alternative approach can increase my students conceptual understanding of the algebra content. Consequently, perhaps the math proficiency can dramatically increase.”
