SUMMER SEA TERM 2010

◦ Accrual of mandated sea-time for USCG licensure as Third Mate or Third Assistant Engineer. ◦ Practical application of academic coursework covered during the semester. ◦ Assimilation to shipboard lifestyle. ◦ Application of traditional leadership principles to daily structure; i.e. followership, teambuilding, and small group leadership. ◦ Exposure to a variety of unique and different cultures through port visits.

◦ Deck & Engineering cadets are assigned ◦ All Deck & Engineering cadets are assigned into three divisions, and will work with their respective division through the course of the sea-term. ◦ Deck and Engine divisions rotate through three evolutions in three day cycles; lecture, watch, and maintenance and repair (M & R).  Lecture: Classroom instruction.  Watch: Assigned 4 hour duty on Bridge or in Engine Room.  M & R: Supervised shipboard maintenance. ◦ Lecture and M & R are not in effect during most Sundays at sea or while in port.

◦ Pre-Cruise Period (03-07 May)  All Cadets must report on Monday, 03 May  Mess deck will be 0630  First Class cadets are to 0700  All underclass are to 0730  Cadets will remain in their assigned dormitory rooms  Move/check-out of dorm rooms will be Friday/Saturday (07/08 May)  Objective: To prepare vessel and all ship’s compliment for departure.  Familiarization and safety training (USCG Drill – Thursday 06 May)  Security briefing/training  Acclimation to shipboard routine – Familiarization with Training Plans  Storing of vessel – ship’s stores and cadet luggage*  Plant/machinery space preparation and light-off Specific Elements of Cruise

◦ At-Sea/Underway time (May 10- June 22/June 24-Aug 07)  The 2010 training cruise is formatted differently to enhance training  All First Class Cadets will be onboard for the complete training period, and will have increased watch time, better preparation for the license exam, and increased opportunities for leadership/development  All underclass will do either the first or the second training period, and will change out in the port of Dublin via charter carrier  This results in less underclass onboard for either cruise period, and allows for more training in all three areas – lecture, watch standing and practical M&R. It also results in less crowding in the berthing areas, and mess deck ◦  Objective: Shipboard training while accruing required sea-time for USCG licensure.  STCW Safety Training in Firefighting/Sea survival  Anchoring handling/ vessel maneuvering operations  Bunkering off Gibraltar  Extensive piloting – Azores, Straits of Messina, Bonifacio Specific Elements of Cruise

 Five total ports (4 ports x 3 days/change out port x 4 days)  All cadets will have equal liberty during the cruise, and will be offered the opportunity to participate in pre-arranged tours and to have free time on their own in each of the ports. Athletic events/competition will be prearranged in some of the ports for college varsity programs  Liberty hours are assessed and determined based on class seniority and on individual performance. Liberty violations/irresponsibility will be dealt with firmly  All ports and the ship’s itinerary are approved by the State Department and can change at any time  Passports are required for all cadets onboard  Objective: Port visits offer exposure to a variety of unique and different cultures, Maritime industries and foreign training/institutions/students.

◦ Post-Cruise (07-09 August 2010)  T/S EMPIRE STATE will return to Fort hours on Saturday, 07 August.  All First Class Cadets will be signed off/released from the vessel on arrival that day. Parents are encouraged to make arrangements for their return home.  All underclass cadets must work the post cruise period, and will be released from the vessel on Monday, 09 hours. No exceptions will be allowed unless prior arrangements have been made and approved. On arrival day, underclass cadets will be dismissed from the vessel until formation on Sunday morning (0730). ◦  Objective of the Post-cruise period:  Unloading of remaining stores, equipment  Shut down and secure all machinery and equipment  Clean all common spaces and berthing areas, in preparation for INDOC  Ship returned to lay-up status All Cadets are required to complete the Post-Cruise Period Specific Elements of Cruise

 Cadet and vessel safety is our #1 priority. ◦ All Ships permanent staff have completed level 2 security training. ◦ All Cadets/crew will be required to attend pre-cruise security level briefing, and are to complete a basic security on-line security assessment.  The T/S EMPIRE STATE itinerary is bound by and in full compliance with State Department regulations.
