Develop an understanding of all elements of Digital Citizenship 4. Leave today with a vision of what you can do to better use and plan for technology in your classroom and school!

The information in this presentation has been created and researched by Mike Ribble and Gerald Bailey author of “Digital Citizenship in Schools” and founder of the website “Digital Citizenship: Using Technology Appropriately”

“It is the proper and correct actions that should be taken by those using digital technology... “ “Digital Citizenship: Students demonstrate personal development to be life long learners because they are aware of the human, cultural and social issues related to technology and they practise ethical and legal digital behaviour.” ISTE in National Technology Education Standards

At Leading and Learning 2009, Dr. Phil McRae has suggested, are we following citizenship practices and applying them to a digital environment? Rather than debate the definition, we will look at the context.

“Full electronic participation in society.” All people should have fair access to technology no matter who they are. Does everyone in your school have equal opportunities as far as technology use is concerned? Do all students have the opportunity to be involved in a digital society?

Finland: The federal government offers free high-speed internet access to all citizens! Do 1-1 laptop projects put other students at a disadvantage in their own schools?

“The buying and selling of goods online.” Users need to learn about how to be effective consumers in a new digital economy. So what does this have to do with students & school? Are students aware of the opportunities and problems associated with purchasing items using technology? Should they be more aware? How many students have itunes accounts? Play in virtual worlds like Habbo? Ebay? Flikr Creative Commons Uploaded on September 12, 2007 by richardmasonerSeptember 12, 2007richardmasoner

“The electronic exchange of information.” Unfortunately, many users have not been taught how to make appropriate decisions when faced with so many different digital communication options. Do I use , cell phone, and instant messaging technologies appropriately when communicating with others? What rules, options and etiquette do students need to be aware of when using digital communication technologies? Flikr Creative Commons Uploaded on February 19, 2008 by silly_a1804February 19, 2008silly_a1804

“The capability to use digital technology and knowing when and how to use it.” Learners must be taught how to learn in a digital society. Should technology be used to access information to learn new concepts? How can students use digital technologies to take best advantage of the educational opportunities available to them?

But how can we become a digitally literate society if these technologies and applications that students use as part of their social structures, are forced to be left at the door of their school before enter? Why? Fear??? Creative Commons - Uploaded on June 16, 2008by anarchosynJune 16, 2008anarchosyn

“The standards of conduct expected by other digital technology users.” It is not enough to create rules and policy, we must teach everyone to become responsible digital citizens in this new society. Are students aware of others when they use technology? Do students realize how their use of technology affects others? “The legal rights and restrictions governing technology use.” Users need to understand that stealing or causing damage to other people’s work, identity, or property online is a crime. Are students using technology the way it was intended? Are students infringing on others’ rights by the way they use technology? Should students using digital technologies be accountable for how they use digital technologies? Flikr Creative Commons Uploaded on May 22, 2008 by darrenjsylvesterMay 22, 2008darrenjsylvester

“The privileges and freedoms extended to all digital technology users, and the behavioral expectations that come with them.” Users must help define how the technology is to be used in an appropriate manner. What rights and responsibilities do students have in a digital society? How do we make students more aware of their rights and responsibilities when using digital technologies?

Are we educational institutions in Georgia and North Carolina?
