Aerospace Nuclear Science and Technology Technical Group Presentation to the ANS Board of Directors Dr. Robert C. Singleterry Jr. November 19 th, 2003

ANST Mission Organized to promote the advancement of knowledge in the use of nuclear science and technologies in the aerospace application. Specialized nuclear-based technologies and applications are needed to advance the state-of-the-art in aerospace design, engineering and operations to explore planetary bodies in our solar system and beyond, plus enhance the safety of air travel, especially high speed air travel. Areas of interest will include but are not limited to the creation of nuclear-based power and propulsion systems, multifunctional materials to protect humans and electronic components from atmospheric, space, and nuclear power system radiation, human factor strategies for the safety and reliable operation of nuclear power and propulsion plants by non- specialized personnel and more.

ANST Governance Executive Committee Structure –2 new members per year –Equilibrium of a 4 year term –Currently, ANS and ANST records mismatch –Finalizing our By-laws Planning –Succession: In Progress –Tactical (1 yr): In Progress –Strategic (5 yr): In Progress

ANST Membership

ANST Contributions to ANS ANS Position Statements –# 40: Space Nuclear Technology, 2000 Participation with Other Professional Societies –None as of yet Society Leadership –None as of yet Non-Meeting Publications –None as of yet

ANST Services to Membership Professional Development –None as of yet –Had “history” sessions Scholarships –None as of yet Peer Recognition/Awards –None as of yet Student Support –None as of yet

ANST Meetings National Meeting Participation –Participation of 2-4 sessions per year

ANST Meetings Future Embedded Topical –Postpone from Nov 04 to Jun 05 –Not enough participation capability yet –Naval Reactor’s participation unknown –Classification of research and production unknown –Concentration on integration of the spacecraft –Not the topic of STAIF –GC’s are the leaders of the NASA projects Project Prometheus Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter (JIMO)

Summary Increasing membership Membership is still increasing Still struggling with the ANS paperwork –This is a membership time problem –Small number of active members Finding a path for an embedded topical –Waiting for Congress –Waiting for Naval Reactors role –Path for information presentation
