Fabrics, Yarns and Fibers Fashion Design Mrs. Kondik

Fabric Made up of yarns and fibers. We all have our favorite types Comes in many different colors, patterns, textures

Fabric Performance Strength Durability Abrasion resistance Shape retention Absorbency Resiliency Elasticity Wrinkle resistance Luster Wicking Washability

Your Fabric Select a piece of fabric from your table. Attach it to your paper in the fabric box.

Yarns Made from 1 type of fiber or many put together. Twist 2 yarns together – Alters texture – Produces different color

Spun Yarns Made from staple fibers – Really short, measured in cm or inches – All natural fibers

Filament Yarns Made of filament fibers – Long continuous fibers – Silk – Manufactured Smoother More lustrous Monofilament – One strand Nylon Fishing line Multifilament – Filament fibers twisted together

Ply Yarns Twist 2 or more single yarns together Ply tells number of strands Can form a cord or cable High-twist: firm, strong, relatively fine Too-tight: weaken Low-twist: softer, weaker

Novelty Yarns 2 or more yarns that are not a like are put together Sometimes have loops around each other.

Your Yarns Pull out a yarn from your fabric piece and place it on your paper. What type of yarn is it?

Fibers Types Natural – Comes from plants, animals Manufactured – Made in a factory Names Generic: – general classification – Wool, cotton, nylon Trade: – Copyrighted – Dacron® by DuPont – Acrilan® by Solutia

Fiber Pull out a fiber from your fabric/yarn. We are now going to complete a lab.
