Cancer Prevention and Research Institute HJR 90: $3 Billion Cancer Research Fund HJR 90 authorizes $3 B in General Obligation Bonds for cancer research Goal: make Texas the global leader in cancer research Voters approved constitutional amendment in November, 2007 Bonds will generate $300 million/yr. for cancer research and may be issued sooner than September

Cancer Prevention & Research Institute Oversight Committee 11 members to manage Institute  9 members appointed by Governor, Lt. Gov., Speaker  Comptroller and Atty. Cancer Prevention & Research Institute Priority Projects Committee should give priority to projects that:  Lead to immediate/long-term medical scientific breakthroughs  Enhance fundamental science in cancer  Ensure comprehensive coordinated approach to cancer research  Are interdisciplinary/interinstitutional 8

Cancer Prevention & Research Institute Use of funds Not more than 10% may be used for cancer control/prevention Not more than 5% may be used for construction of facilities Not more than 5% may be used for indirect costs Match funding required ($.50 match for every $1 in grant funding) 10
