What is Health In Action A collection of web-based lesson plans written by and evaluated by educators from across the state Lesson plans that are linked to web-based resources, classroom materials and videos Lesson plans that can be implemented in regular classrooms, gyms or on the playground For all educators!

What is Health In Action (continued) Lesson plans that link school health education and physical education with core academic subjects Lesson plans that are based on State and National Standards for Health and Physical Education Age appropriate lesson plans that are based on competencies prescribed by state Health and Physical Education frameworks

Why Health In Action? Funded by the John D. Bower, M.D. Foundation, Health In Action has been developed to assist educators to implement the requirements of the MS Healthy Students Act.

Mississippi Healthy Students Act (House Bill 732/Senate Bill Section ) Mandates 150 minutes per week of physical activity based instruction K-8 Mandates 45 minutes per week of health education, K-8 Requires ½ Carnegie Unit of physical education for graduation, 9-12 Appropriates funds for a physical education coordinator to be housed at MDE

MS Healthy Students Act continued….. Requires the State Board of Education to establish regulations for child nutrition school breakfast and lunch programs to include how food items are prepared, time allotted for the consumption of breakfast and lunch, extra food sales, marketing and retail fast foods. Defines the duties of the School Health Councils to include a coordinated approach to school health

HEALTH IN ACTION LESSON PLANS ARE: Grade level appropriate for K-2; 3-5; 6-8; and 9-12 grades Activity based to get students up and moving and engaged in learning that is fun!

When Can I Use the Health In Action Website? NOW – all you need is a computer and internet access! The Mississippi Office of Healthy School’s goal is to use every opportunity to train educators to access and use the site as they prepare plans for their classroom.

Who is using Health In Action? 2,070 people, representing 41 states, have registered on the site.

New To the Site: Safe Routes to School Lesson Plans to assist educators in teaching walking and bicycling safety! Tobacco Education Lesson Plans have been added. We have collaborated with The Partnership for a Healthier Mississippi to add their tobacco lesson plans to the site.

New to the Site - continued Violence Prevention lessons that are tied to English Literature, Drama, Government, History, Economics, Marketing and Art standards and curriculums. To come soon…More plans that focus on asthma education.
