Mississippi River Delta By Rudra and Monsi

Physical Geography ● Location-The Mississippi River Delta region is a 3-million-acre area of land that stretches from Vermillion Bay east to the Chandeleur Islands on the southern coast of Louisiana. ● Relative Location N W ● Landforms- Mississippi Delta is a landform. ● Movement-The Mississippi River Delta contains seven of the top 50 seafood landing ports in the United States. ● Human made features-dams,Levees,Navigation, gas and oil canals.

Mississippi Delta

Climate ● Environment - wetlands eroding ● Water use- Energy source, fishing, diversion of water and the creation of dams for hydroelectric power or to create reservoirs can radically alter delta ecosystems. ● Ecosystem-land loss caused by oil spills and gas canals ● Effects on area-Loss of coastline is causing the lost of many habitats. ● Human interaction-As people began to clear the land, farm it, and live on it, the persistent floods became a nuisance and an economic hazard. A program of levee-building, and eventually the construction of man-made dams and reservoirs, emerged as a way to control the river.

Average Temperature of Mississippi Delta

Region ● Place or region- Region ● What is the region-Mississippi is considered by some as part of the “Bible Belt".Tourist region, catfish production region, timber region, and certain landform regions. ● Why is it a region-It is a region because the whole economy depends on a delta. They can use water for farming, fishing and transportation. It also connects US economy to the entire world by shipping or buying goods from another countries.

Mississippi Regions

Human ● Population -Estimated population-2,918,785 ● Demographic-Percent Adult HS Graduates-72.9%,African Americans- 36.3%,Individuals Below Poverty-19.9%,under 5 years old-7.2%,65 years or older-12.1% ● Density-63.5/sq mi (24.5/km 2 ) ● Movement-Major waterways such as the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico provided transportation for early settlers.Today, complex systems of communication and transportation connect Mississippians with each other and, increasingly, with the entire world.

Culture Ethnic groups: Americans, African Americans and Chinese Language: Southern American English. Religion: Catholic and Missionary Baptists. Social groups:

Economy Agricultural Economy. Exports/Imports: $100 billion worth of commodities and finished goods. Agriculture: The Delta’s fertile soils, temperate climate, and extended growing seasons are a boon to the region’s agriculture production. Soybeans, rice, sugar cane, various feed grains, hay, and cotton are produced on study area farms.

Resources ● Natural: Fishing, hunting oil and natural gas are the most important natural resources ● Pollution: Runoff pollution is one of the main source of pollution the river ● Pollution and Management: The dead zone causes nutrient enrichment from the Mississippi River, particularly nitrogen and phosphorous. In a natural system, these nutrients aren't significant factors in algae growth because they are depleted in the soil by plants.Consequently, algal blooms develop, the food chain is altered, and dissolved oxygen in the area is depleted.

● Canals crisscross the Mississippi River Delta near Golden Meadow, Louisiana, where nutrient pollution remains a problem
