Asking about Age Сколько вам лет ? (How old are you?-formal) Сколько тебе лет? (How old are you?-informal) Image courtesy of Serge Bertasius Photography at FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Talking about the Age When telling about a person’s age, there are two main differences between English and Russian. First, the name (or pronoun) is placed in the dative case instead of nominative, so while in English we would say "Mom is 40", Russians would say "Ma ме 40", as if "mom [was given] 40"; second, the translation of English expression “years old” is a bit tricky. Depending on the number, you will have to use one of three Russian words for "year". That would be either год, года, or лет. The meaning is the same, but the usage depends on the number. The following table summarizes it: 1, 21, 31, 41, 51, 61, 71, 81, 91: use word год 2, 3, 4, , , 42-44, 52-54, 62-64, 72 – 74, 82-84, 92-94: use word года 5 – 20, 25 – 30, 35-40, 45-50, 55-60, 65-70, , 85-90, : use лет Examples: Сколько Вам лет ? (How old are you?) Мне 21 год. Сестре 34 года. Маме 45 лет.

Talking about the Age II How will you say the following is Russian? (Please note that possessive pronouns in Russian can often be omitted is the meaning is clear while in English we use them a lot.) 1.How old are you? I am 19 years old. 2.How old is your Mom? Mom is 42 years old. 3.How old is (your) brother? (My) brother is 9 years old. 4.How old is (your) Dad? (My) Dad is 45 years old.

Adjectives Старший - Младший When we talk about the family, we can use older ( старший / старшая ) and younger ( младший / младшая ) words to describe relatives. Pay attention to masculine and feminine endings: Masculine: старший, младший. Feminine: старшая, младшая. Examples:1. Это моя старшая сестра 2. Это мой старший брат 3. Мне 17 лет. Это моя старшая сестра. Ей 22 года. А это мой младший брат. Ему 1 год. Image courtesy of stockimages at FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Comparisons Старше - Младше When you describe a family you can use the following phrases: Она / он старше меня на …(use same rule given earlier to determine - год, года, or лет ) Он / она младше меня на … (use same rule given earlier to determine - год, года, or лет ) Example: Мне 18 лет.

Image courtesy of stockimages at FreeDigitalPhotos.net
