Patient’s Process of Developing Healthy Habits The Internal Ambivalence LIKES DISLIKES

Process of Developing Healthy Habits TIME Auto-pilot Thoughts Feelings Behaviors Triggers

Aware and Do Requires:  Practice of mindfulness  Time  Acknowledgment of your feelings of like and dislike.  Doing what needs to be done now to create the new habit.  Indirect influence of feelings through doing  Building self-confidence through accomplishing the small action plan.

YouTube - Dr. Ruth Wolever Mindfulness and Behavior Change The Positive Impact of Mindfulness Practice - eMindful - Dr. Ruth Wolever (Clip 8) For further inquiry:

Patient Action Plan Strategize to resolve expected barriers. Strategize to prevent triggers. Assess confidence level >8 What-How Much-When-How Often-How Confident Achieve within the target period. Something client WANTS to do, not SHOULD do.

Strategies for Developing a Healthy Habit Accept Reality  Acknowledge the actual situation. Know One’s Purpose/Objective  Action Plan Do What Needs To Be Done  Uni-focus on getting one thing done at a time. Delay Old Habits  By having a time gap between impulse and action.

Elements of Effective Coaching More listening than talking. More asking than telling. More reflecting than commenting. Not advising how to solve problems.

Health Coaching Process Assess patient’s current lifestyle Assess patient’s strengths and past successes Assess what is important to the person right now Assess what the patient wants to work on now Guide, support, teach, and link person to resources Coach patient to develop an action plan of small steps Patient tries the action plan Follow up with patient and develop another action plan…

Key components of Coaching Psychology Health Coach Listens Provides support Expresses caring Is positive Uses open-ended questions to bring awareness of the current perception and new possibilities. Patient Doubts Resists Fear Not trusting Clinging to the ‘Like’ and resisting the ‘Dislike’ Wants quick results

Distinguish Between Life Coaching and Coaching in Health Care The reality is that health is related to almost every aspect of the patient’s life. Life coaching focuses on the person’s life purpose. Coaching in health care focuses more on managing chronic conditions or overall health Life coaching and coaching in healthcare can be overlapped. Life coach and health coach both assess the person’s values and beliefs because that is the source of sustaining the motivation to develop life skills Health is the resource of life and preventive self care is the key to preserving that resource
