Venetian carnival By: Lacey

The first recorded carnival occurred in1268. It was outlawed in the 1930’s, and was not revived until the 1980’s. Carnival starts two weeks before Ash Wednesday and ends on Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras day.

Carnival time! Traditionally masks were used in carnivals. After a while, they were banned from going into religious places with them on.

Types of masks! One type of mask is the Bauta which means, “mask which covers the whole face, with a stubborn chin line, no mouth, and lots of gilding”. The next was the Moretta, which is an oval mask of black velvet that was usually worn by women visiting convents. Lastly, the larva which is also called the volto. It is mainly white and typically Venetian!
