Activities

Pre-viewing or warm up activities How would you rate your level of persistence when it comes to achieving ambitions you set? A) Answer the following question: Do I believe I can achieve whatever I set my mind to? Why/ Why not?

B) Choose the answer that best suits you When a goal isn't progressing as well or as quickly as I expected it to, I tend to: Give up and focus my energy on another goal. Put it aside for a while. Take a step back, review what's going wrong, and try a different approach. Keep at it as I've been doing, and don't stop until I succeed.

Which of the following options best represents your approach towards life? "Go with the flow" - you'll sit back and enjoy the ride, going wherever the wind takes you. "Grab it by the horns" - you refuse to sit back and watch your life go by - you want to take charge of your life and take active steps to achieve what you want. "Live life to the fullest, but stop and smell the roses" - you think it's important to set and achieve your goals, but it's also great to sit back and just have fun sometimes too.

Ambition can be positive in the sense it pushes you to achieve your goals. However, it can also become negative when it turns into an obsession and you end up doing whatever it takes to achieve the goal.

Nicolas Macchiavello Motivation The reason why somebody does something or behaves in a particular way Positive or negative Intrinsic or extrinsic What motivates you? Goals something that you hope to achieve Long-term What do you think can be considered a goal? Means An action, an object or a system by which a result is achieved; a way of achieving or doing something What can be a means to achieve something that you want? “An End Justifies Any Means”

While-viewing activities Answer with True (T) or False (F): …….. Eduardo betrays his friend …….. Mark is unhappy with his former life …….. Eduardo is asked to invest more money in the company …….. Eduardo keeps all the money after signing the contract

Post-viewing activities Debate in groups the following questions: Which themes are represented in the scene of the movie “Social Network”? Can they be related to the play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof? Who do you think is the Cat in the Hot Tin Roof? Mark or Eduardo? Why? How can you relate the characters in the movie with those in the play?

Conclu s ion

Ambition, as everything in life, has its positive side. However, when it is taken to an extreme it can become negative. The different characters in both stories exemplify the polarity of ambition. Each of them tried to do something good (even if the best results only help the doer), but in the same way, all the characters also show the toxic side of ambition, which lead us to discuss this idea of lying and going over other people to achieve a goal.
