Tasmania Trip 2014

Key Dates and Times Saturday the 27th September - 6.30 am at school for a 7.00 am departure Sunday the 5th October - 6.00pm at Canberra Airport

Day 1 (Saturday 27/9) Canberra – Melbourne - Devonport BREAKFAST AND LUNCH ARE NOT INCLUDED!! Assemble at school at 6.30 AM for a 7.00 AM departure Coach transfer to Station Pier (Melbourne) Spirit of Tasmania 4 Berth Inside Cabin 5:00pm Board the Spirit of Tasmania 7:30pm Begin overnight sailing to Devonport Dinner provided on board the Spirit

Day 2 (Sunday 28/9) Devonport to Strahan 6:00am Arrival in Devonport Coach Travel Devonport to Cradle Mountain National Park Explore the park Cradle Mountain to Strahan via the Henty Hills Sand Dunes After dinner, live theatre show on the Great Escape from Sarah Island

Day 3 (Monday 29/9) Strahan Full day cruise (including lunch), stopping at “Hell’s Gate” and “Sarah Island”

Day 4 (Tuesday 30/9) Strahan to Hobart Coach travel Strahan to Hobart (via Queenstown & Derwent Bridge) Sightseeing at Salamanca Place, Constitution Dock & Battery Point Evening – ten pin bowling at Moonah

Day 5 (Wednesday 1/10) Hobart surrounds Visit Mt Field National Park See historic town of New Norfolk Walk to Russell Falls Travel to Mt Nelson for panoramic view of Hobart Explore the MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) 5.00pm – Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. Interactive wildlife experience including feeding Tasmanian devils and other native Tasmanian animals.

Day 6 (Thursday 2/10) Hobart surrounds Travel via Huonville, historic Franklin and Geeveston Visit Heritage Museum Tour around Tahune Forest Reserve & Stixx Valley Experience Tahune Forest Airwalk (50 metres above Huon River) Tour the Hastings Caves and kick back in the Thermal Springs Optional putt-putt golf during evening.

Day 7 (Friday 3/10) Port Arthur Travel to Port Arthur See the Tasman Arch & “Devil’s Kitchen” Guided tour of Port Arthur Historic Site & Harbour cruise Evening ghost tour

Day 8 (Saturday 4/10) Port Arthur to Coles Bay Coach travel Port Arthur to Coles Bay Visit Freycinet National Park

Day 9 (Sunday 5/10) Coles Bay to Canberra Coach travel from Coles Bay to Launceston Airport Stop at Cataract Gorge Chairlift ride at Launceston’s basin Flight to Canberra via Melbourne Parents to pick kids up from the Airport at 6pm

Flights home Depart Launceston Airport (flight VA1371) * Students will need ID Cards Arrive Melbourne Airport (approx. hr stop over) Depart Melbourne Airport Arrive in Canberra at 6.00pm (flight VA279) *Maximum weight for checked luggage is 20Kg *Maximum weight for carry on luggage is 7Kg No sharps, aerosols and limits apply to liquids

Essential Equipment Please ensure you pack: Sleeping bag, pillow and sheet. Daypack/backpack – needs to contain toiletries Torch (with batteries) Toiletries (including sunscreen) Towels – bath towel plus beach towel

Clothing and Extras Pack more for a winter trip than a summer trip! Warm jumpers x 2 (trip jumper and one other) Jacket (preferably water and windproof) Thermals and beanie Underwear for at least 9 days (including warm socks) Long pants x 2 Warm pyjamas Shorts and shirts Swimmers (optional – for hot springs) Camera Drink bottle Hat & Sunglasses Appropriate walking shoes/runners - we will be doing some long walks! Zip washing bag, watch, power board

$pending Money Remember; Most meals and snacks are included Tasmania is not regarded as a ‘shopping destination’ We (teachers) think that a maximum of $250 is a good ballpark figure.

Inappropriate items Illegal substances such as drugs including cigarettes, alcohol or other items deemed inappropriate during school are prohibited on this trip and if students are caught in possession may result in students being sent home at cost to the family. Keep electrical items to a minimum – if necessary, share your item within an agreed group, such as phone chargers, hair straighteners etc. Space is limited and electrical sockets are not always available. Students will be responsible for their own items. Inappropriate attire will be addressed if necessary – remember we’re representing not only our school but our community and city!

Student Responsibility Electrical Devices - It is the student’s responsibility for the security of their own possessions. It is advised that students keep mobile devices to a minimum. There will be limited phone/ internet reception in many of these places. - NO SLEEP OVERS!!!
