Boiling and Melting Points

Melting Melting Point- when a solid substance turns to liquid.

Boiling When a liquid receives enough heat to change to a gas. Water boils at 212 degrees F.

Native Americans and Science??? Native Americans originally taught the settlers how to tap maple trees for the sap in order to make maple syrup.

The Maple Tree The maple tree is a common tree in the deciduous forest, and most all the foods the early colonists cooked used ingredients that could be found in their environment.

Maple Syrup Maple syrup was used many different ways other than pouring over pancakes. One favorite way was to make candy. Colonists would get together in the spring and collect sap to make the candy.

Answer the ?s in your notebook! How can heat change the physical form of food? How did heat change the physical form of the maple syrup? How might the melting and boiling points of different substances be useful info? Why do different substances have different melting and boiling points?
