Bringing commercial advantages to the companies Industries that were set up (mainly tobacco) earned a profit for colony Religious freedom Roman Catholics were being persecuted in England fled to establish a colony so could practice their religion however they wanted

Maryland was a province- Lord Baltimore’s authority was like the power of a king Representative government First proprietary government in colonial America (government by a lord proprietor, who holds his authority of a royal charter)

Boundary issues between Maryland and Pennsylvania Mason-Dixon line dividing the border of Maryland and Pennsylvania Purchased land from the Native Americans Charter stated that everyone within colony will have same rights as if they were living in England Almost all landowners were Catholic Battles between Virginia and Maryland over land disputes

English settlement Leonard Calvert took 200 immigrants to the settlement at St. Mary, Maryland. Annapolis was founded in 1683 and Baltimore in 1729.

Manufacturing goods such as shipbuilding and iron works Agriculture included tobacco, corn, wheat, rice, and indigo

Indentured servants Held contract for 5-6 years to earn freedom from master Got the right to vote once owned land

First colony that practiced religious tolerance Toleration Act 1649 People who were being persecuted from other colonies came to Maryland for religious tolerance Catholics and Protestants lived in same colony Virginians did not agree with religious freedom Puritans have revolted against the proprietary form of government Since the first settlements in Maryland were populated by immigrants, having those different traditions made it hard to set up society
