How Does the Internet Work  In the mid 1960s, during the Cold War it became necessary for a bombproof communications system.  A concept was devised to link computers together throughout the country. This connection allowed people to stay connected to important information even if one part of the community was lost during an attack. This was designed as an emergency military communications system operated by the Department of Defense. Governments and Universities were the only ones linked in the beginning

How Does the Internet Work  Years later, business began using the Internet  They set up their own servers and cabinets At this time no one party “operated” the Internet Equipment took up very large spaces sometimes including entire buildings Very little delay in information moving from one location to another Perfect source for news and weather information

How Does the Internet Work  Information does not travel directly from one place to another, but gets broken up into separate data packets  This information is labeled and sent to a unique internet address  This process takes place in a matter of milliseconds

Using the Internet  The internet is a great place to find information to use for papers and projects.  Now you have learned a little bit about how this tool has evolved over time to make our work a little easier.  You will use the Internet for many years to come
