Finished apron project The brief behind this project was to take the idea of an apron and exaggerate it, reject it, or pull it to pieces
My own apron project was focussed on the hidden responsibilities of women; to clean up after others, to make sure things get done and to be the housekeeper. Although politically we are all equal, in the kitchen we often are not
I expressed this burden by using stone weights to pull down the straps of the apron There are small objects hidden throughout my design. An iron, knitting needles…symbols of the role of women but unobvious like the way it is not acknowledged by society
There is also the idea of femininity in my work, shown by the colours and textures of the fabrics I chose
Materials used include tea-stained lace, satin, embroidery thread, found fabrics, screen printed fabric The purpose of the project was to show our ability to screen print and use sewing techniques. I used a lace doily and created a lace stencil in plastic to keep to the theme of femininity
