In home, the final frontier? Research and development of broadband equipment In home, the final frontier? A close encounter with the RGU

After the last mile, the last meter The indoor challenge When a telecommunication network is seen from an economical vantage point, every part is a significant cost; Equipment number price cost Few expensive head-ends + ++++ ≈ Some cost effective nodes ++ +++ A lot of high quality amplifiers Heaps of indoor equipment

After the last mile, the last meter The indoor challenge when equipment gets closer to the customer, the price per unit decreases dramatically however the number of units required increases as well;

After the last mile, the last meter The indoor challenge the dreaded last mile has been subdued by the telco players, only to be replaced by another challenge, the last meter; Meter Mile

After the last mile, the last meter The indoor challenge all the services available in the street are to no avail if the implementation requires the customer to tear his house apart; solutions are few and far between, and can be costly.

The Coax cable The ubiquitous coaxial cable in the households has superior performance for data transmission. It has been used in data transmission for years and is a better medium then even the most modern of twisted pair cablings including CAT 7 This is the reason why signals that require great care have always been distributed over coax (TV, satellite…) This superior technology has been largely overlooked for the last years. It is however capable to deliver high speed data for peanuts compared to installing new cabling.

The Coax cable, hidden gold The ubiquitous coaxial cable in the households has superior performance for data transmission. It is however capable to deliver high speed data for peanuts compared to installing new cabling.

Ethernet over coax By combining : An existing medium An existing technology a reliable and very cost effective solution can be found for the last-meter issues.

Ethernet over Coax The superior quality of the coax cable, the veins of the CATV network, allows us to set up an Ethernet network over the legacy coaxial in home cabling, sending bidirectional data and delivering existing services to the different rooms in the house. Applications: Every TV outlet becomes a "PC"-outlet; Interactive services to set top boxes can be provided over IP via a centralised modem; IP STB's can be rolled-out using the existing coax cable.

Every TV outlet NIU

Every TV outlet becomes a PC outlet ENIU

Ethernet over Coax: How does it work? The Baseband part of the CATV network is not used in home; The returnband can be filtered off for in home use; Return Path Radio Analogue TV Digital QAM

Ethernet over Coax: How does it work? The Baseband part of the CATV network is not used in home; The returnband can be filtered off for in home use; Ethernet is a baseband system, and it's spectrum can be used in stead of the redundant returnband spectrum These signals are than combined in the E-NIU; and separated in the outlet. Ethernet Radio Analogue TV Digital QAM

Ethernet over Coax: How does it work? CATV (Coax) CATV (Coax) CATV + Ethernet (Coax) Ethernet (TP) Ethernet (TP) E-NIU E-Outlet

Why Use Ethernet over Coax It gives the IP world access to the coax in house! carlos.colson@dinh.be
