How to end the war in Japan Option 1: A land invasion of Japan much like D-Day. Hundreds of thousands of Americans lives are expected to be lost. Fighting will continue in Japan for 1-2 more years. Option 2: Use a new weapon called the Atom Bomb. It has never been used before so it’s effectiveness is unknown. Potentially no need for a land invasion. Minimal to no Americans lives lost. Expected to end fighting within weeks.

Option 2 was Picked The US and British forces decided to go with Option 2 and try to end the fighting in the Pacific ASAP. Two medium sized cities were picked (Hiroshima and Nagasaki). On August 6 th, Hiroshima was bombed. On Aug. 9 th, Nagasaki was bombed. Japan surrenders on Aug. 15 th.

Affects of the Bombs 90,000–166,000 killed in Hiroshima 60,000–80,000 killed in Nagasaki Total: 150,000– 246,000+ killed Thousands more died the years following from post bomb affects such as cancer, radiation exposure, and third degree burns. “I realize the tragic significance of the atomic bomb... It is an awful responsibility which has come to us... We thank God that it has come to us, instead of to our enemies; and we pray that He may guide us to use it in His ways and for His purposes”
