Reading Reminders  Read for at least 20 minutes every day  Even if your child can read independently all children enjoy being read to by their parents or other family members  It is great for children to read books written in English or their home language  The local public library and Arcola’s media center are great places to borrow exciting books

Reading Comprehension After your child reads a book it is important to talk about what they learned or what the book was about.

Reading Comprehension Fiction Books (stories) 1. Talk about the story elements Characters – People or animals in the story Setting – Where and when the story happens Problem – Something that goes wrong Solution – How the problem is fixed Events – Things that happened in the story Main Idea – The most important idea or message in the story. 2. Retell the story (What happened in the beginning, middle, and end?) Non-fiction Books (informational) 1. Talk about new facts that were learned 2. What was the most interesting thing you learned? 3. What would you like to learn more about?

Reading Comprehension Here are some other questions that you can use to talk about the books you and your child are reading…  What happened in the story?  What is the title and who is the author?  What was your favorite part?  What did you learn from the story?  Has something like this ever happened to you? (Making a personal connection to the book)  What were some important facts from the story?
