Anyone Can Fall  1 Corinthians 10:13 Overconfident John 13:36-38

1 Corinthians 10:13 (NASB) 13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

Anyone Can Fall  1 Corinthians 10:13  Temptation comes to all – secondary  God has provided a way – primary  Satan tries to get us to think:  The temptation is extraordinary  We are way beyond that temptation  We are too old for a particular temptation  David versus Peter Overconfident John 13:36-38

Steps to a Fall  When a fall comes, it seems to come suddenly, without warning, but this is rarely the case. Overconfident John 13:36-38

Steps to a Fall  When a fall comes, it seems to come suddenly, without warning, but this is rarely the case.  First – we see Peter as being overconfident  Peter makes a protest with a question  John 15:5 Overconfident John 13:36-38

John 15:5 (NASB) 5 I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.

Steps to a Fall  When a fall comes, it seems to come suddenly, without warning, but this is rarely the case.  First – we see Peter as being overconfident  Peter makes a protest with a question  John 15:5  Peter fails not at his weakest point but at his strongest – 2 Corinthians 12:10 Overconfident John 13:36-38

2 Corinthians 12:10 (NASB) 10 Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.

Steps to a Fall  When a fall comes, it seems to come suddenly, without warning, but this is rarely the case.  First – we see Peter as being overconfident  Peter makes a protest with a question  John 15:5  Peter fails not at his weakest point but at his strongest – 2 Corinthians 12:10  We must always rely on Jesus and lean on Him Overconfident John 13:36-38

Steps to a Fall  Second – we see Peter’s failure to pray  Luke 22:40 – entering the garden Overconfident John 13:36-38

Luke 22:40-53 (NASB) 40 When He arrived at the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” 41 And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, 42 saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.” 43 Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. 45 When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow,

46 and said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not enter into temptation.” 47 While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was preceding them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50 And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear.

51 But Jesus answered and said, “Stop! No more of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as you would against a robber? 53 While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but this hour and the power of darkness are yours.”

Steps to a Fall  Second – we see Peter’s failure to pray  Luke 22:40 – entering the garden  Matthew 26:40-41 – return from praying Overconfident John 13:36-38

Matthew 26:40-41 (NASB) 40 And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour? 41 Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Steps to a Fall  Second – we see Peter’s failure to pray  Luke 22:40 – entering the garden  Matthew 26:40-41 – return from praying  Luke 22:46 – right before His arrest Overconfident John 13:36-38

Luke 22:46 (NASB) 46 and said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

Steps to a Fall  Second – we see Peter’s failure to pray  Luke 22:40 – entering the garden  Matthew 26:40-41 – return from praying  Luke 22:46 – right before His arrest  1 Thessalonians 5:17 Overconfident John 13:36-38

Steps to a Fall  Third – we see Peter following at a distance  Luke 22:54 – fear had dominated him Overconfident John 13:36-38

Luke 22:54 (NASB) 54 Having arrested Him, they led Him away and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but Peter was following at a distance.

Steps to a Fall  Third – we see Peter following at a distance  Luke 22:54 – fear had dominated him  Peter had measured the situation and lived in fear of the consequences  Fourth – we see Peter in the company of Jesus’ enemies and benefitting from it  We must dwell in the world  But we must not become too familiar with it  Matthew 26:74 Overconfident John 13:36-38

Matthew 26:74 (NASB) 74 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed.

The Presence of Jesus  What did Jesus do?  Jesus warned Peter directly  Jesus prayed for Peter – Luke 22:31-32 Overconfident John 13:36-38

Luke 22:31-32 (NASB) 31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat; 32 but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”

The Presence of Jesus  What did Jesus do?  Jesus warned Peter directly  Jesus prayed for Peter – Luke 22:31-32  Jesus restored and recommissioned Peter  God’s kindness and love gives us second, third, fourth, fifth … chances  Peter was not cast off but was restored for the sake of Jesus’ kingdom Overconfident John 13:36-38

When I survey the wondrous cross, On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride. Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a present far too small, Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.
