Dramatic Irony Irony in a drama that is understood by the audience, but not by other characters. Example: We (the audience) know that although Romeo is attending the party to meet Rosaline, he will actually meet his new love Juliet.
Situational Irony An outcome that turns out to be very different from what is expected to happen and what actually happens. Example: Penelope greets Odysseus with skepticism and doubt. We would expect her to be excited to see him after twenty years.
Verbal Irony A figure of speech in which what is said is the opposite of what is meant.
