Thanksgiving in the USA
Americans celebrate Thanksgiving every year on the fourth Thursday in November. It´s important festival for families, who come together for a long weekend – even if some of them have to travel long distances to get home. The most common meal at Thanksgiving is roast turkey and vegetables. Volunteers spend some of the holiday working in soup kitchens which distribute free food to the poor and homeless.

The History of Thanksgiving Nearly 400 years ago, people from England went to live in North America. They were called Pilgrims. They wanted to start a new life in a new country, but it was difficult for them. They didn´t know how to grow food there or build homes. A lot of them became ill. Mayflower, Autumn 1620

The harvest was good, so they had food for winter. They also had warm homes. They wanted to say thank you to their Native American friends. They invited three of them and their families to a special meal. It was the first Thanksgiving dinner. They ate turkey, fish, green beans and soup.
