Acids  An acid is a material that can release a proton or hydrogen ion (H + )  Acids donate protons Back to Quiz

Bases  A base, or alkali, is a material that can donate a hydroxide ion (OH - )  Bases accept protons Back to Quiz

Neutralization  Acids are paired with bases  The neutralization of an acid and a base produces water and a salt.

Proton Exchange between Water Molecules A proton leaves the first molecule and is accepted by the second. The first becomes a base and the second becomes an acid. The acid then donates a proton and the base accepts the proton.

Ph  A neutral pH can be achieved by adding an equal amount of the acid solution to the base solution
