United States Fire Administration Chief Officer Training Curriculum Leadership Module 8: Contemporary Leadership Issues

United States Fire Administration LDR 8-2 Objectives  Develop the critical factors of a challenging personal leadership issue  Objectively analyze a challenging personal leadership issue from both the perspective of a leader and a confidant  Develop meaningful and practical recommendations to a challenging leadership issue

United States Fire Administration LDR 8-3 Objectives (continued)  Simulate problem-solving techniques in small and large groups to identify creative solutions to practical issues  Relate the concepts, theories, accountability, and values to individual and organizational leadership issues  Address the need for congruity between individual values and organizational values and the organization’s explicit and implicit values

United States Fire Administration LDR 8-4 Objectives (continued)  Determine if a solution will cause a shift in the organization’s dynamics and what effect this disequilibrium may have on the organization  Evaluate any ethical issues this contemporary issue may arouse and how they may impact the organization and its culture

United States Fire Administration LDR 8-5 Objectives (continued)  Identify any leadership KSAs gaps and prepare a personal leadership development plan to eliminate those gaps  If the solution to the issue will cause change to the organization, prepare an organizational change plan of action by application of Bridges’ “concepts” and action steps of leading transitions

United States Fire Administration LDR 8-6 Overview  Pre-course assignment instructed you to research a leadership issue that you currently face in your organization  Work within small groups to select a case study for the group to present to the medium-sized group  The small groups will merge into medium-sized groups

United States Fire Administration LDR 8-7 Overview (continued)  The medium-sized group then selects the cases study to be representative of the group  In the plenary session, the leader for each medium-sized group will present the group’s case study to the large group –The large group will ask questions, provide feedback, break down the case into its critical parts, and objectively analyze each, and develop recommendations for the case study

United States Fire Administration LDR 8-8 Activity 8.1  Review of Fire Service Case Studies –The purpose of this activity is to use the leadership knowledge, skills, and abilities addressed in the Chief Officer Training Curriculum: Leadership Course to analyze contemporary issues that present challenges, opportunities, and threats

United States Fire Administration LDR 8-9 Summary  This activity transfers directly to the other three courses in this curriculum –Human Resource Development –Community Risk Reduction –Operations  Further transfer will occur as you apply the knowledge, skills, and abilities learned in this leadership course to other problems within your department
