What was the Netherlands ( The Dutch) ? This was the European country that took over and controlled the island of Java after 1670.

Who were the British Nabobs? They were the representatives of the British East India Company who went out to secure sudden wealth, often through corruption and deceit.

Who was Lord Charles Cornwallis ? After his defeat at the Battle of Yorktown, he went to India to effectively clean up the corruption of the British East Company during the 1790s.

What were the British run Presidencies of Indians?. Madras, Bombay, and Calcutta became the administrative centers of these three districts that made up the bulk of the territory that Britain ruled in India.

What is Imperialism? This is the domination by one country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country or region.

Who was King Leopold of Belgium? This was the European ruler who set up his own private empire in the Congo.

Who was Robert Clive? ( Drove the French out of India ) He was the British commander at the Battle of Plassey.

What was the Boer War? ( Not a War of History Teachers ) This was the War fought between the British and the Dutch settlers in South Africa from 1899 until 1902 and foretold the problems and atrocities to come in World War I.

What were Sepoys? This is another name for an Indian soldier serving in the British Army.

W ho was Cecil Rhodes ( named Rhodesia after himself and created the Rhodes Scholarship) ? ?? ? He was the British entrepreneur in South Africa who gained access to the gold and diamond mines of central South Africa.

What was the Great Mahele after the death of King Kamehameha? This was the Hawaiian edict issued in 1848 that imposed western property concepts on Hawaiians and resulted in the control of vast tracks of land by western commercial interests.

Who was Ram Mohun Roy? He He was a western educated Indian leader, in the early 19 th century who cooperated with the British to outlaw sati.

W hat was the Great Trek? The name given to the massive migration into the South African interior of thousands of Afrikaners seeking to escape the British.

What was the British Raj?. The rise of this British political establishment in India owed much to the rivalry between the British and the French.

What was Siam ( Now Thailand) ? By 1914, this was the only independent nation in southeast Asia.

What was Nationalism? This was the cultural force with origins in western Europe that urged a collective identity based on culture, race, and ethnic origin.

What was Natal? This was the British colony in South Africa developed after the Boer Trek north from the Cape Colony and a major commercial outpost in Durban.

What was the Kingdom of Mataram? This Kingdom controlled most of the Interior of Java in the 17 th century.
