Bratislava Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia and, with a population of about Bratislava is in southwestern Slovakia, occupying both banks of the Danube River and the left bank of the Morava River. Bordering Austria and Hungary, it is the only national capital that borders two independent countries.

Bratislava Castle The castle, on a hill above the old town, dominates the city of Bratislava. It features in the first written reference to the city, which appears in the Annals of Salzburg of 907, in association with a battle between Bavarians and Hungarians. The castle hill was populated as early as the late Stone Age; its first known inhabitants were the Celts, who founded a fortified settlement here called ‘Oppidum’.

Devín Castle Devín Castle, a national cultural monument, is located at the foot of a cliff above the confluence of the Danube and Morava Rivers. This strategically important site has been settled since the late Stone Age by a succession of groups, from the Celts to the Romans, the Goths to the Lombards, and many more.

St. Martin's Cathedral St. Martin's cathedral is one of the most significant symbols of Bratislava. It was built in the 12th century and almost immediately became the center of the everyday's life. Originally a Roman architecture has been converted in the Gothic style in the 13th century and remains till today.

Slovak National Theatre At that time the townspeople with the contribution of Count Csáky built the first stone theatre (1776) in approximately the same place as today's historical building of the SND. The importance of the city declines in the 19th century. The city theatre is rented by German and later Hungarian companies.

ZOO Bratislava The ZOO Bratislava is a 96-hectare zoo in Bratislava, Slovakia, in the borough of Karlova Ves. It lies in the Little Carpathians forest. As of 2007, the zoo has an area of 96-hectare (240-acre), and is home to 1307 specimens of 152 animal species. In 2006, the zoo received 203,000 visitors.
