SOUTH DAKOTA

HISTORY  There are some Indian tribes in South Dakota including the Sioux and Oglala and others.  The first people in South Dakota were hunters and gatherers who may have appeared as early as 15,000 to 20,000 years ago.  The inhabitants of what is now South Dakota foraged for food, made stone weapons, and hunted big game animals, including the mammoth. This way of life ended around 8000 BC.  The inhabitants lived by farming and others lived by hunting also by gathering food from plants.
