Separable Verbs We have met separable verbs in the Present Tense so far.

PAST PARTICIPLES Strong, Separable Verbs Many Separable Verbs are STRONG (IRREGULAR). To make their PAST PARTICIPLES you have to look them up in the VERB TABLES. To find their PAST PARTICIPLES you will have to look them up WITHOUT their separable prefix.

FINDING SEPARABLE STRONG VERB PAST PARTICIPLES Look up the verb: get up in the Malvern Guide Dictionary. What information do you find?

aufstehen* v irreg sep * means that aufstehen takes “sein” irreg. means that it is a STRONG or IRREGULAR verb sep. means that it is separable

To find the Past Participle of aufstehen Remove the sep. prefix: auf leaving stehen Use the Verb Tables to look up the Past Participle of stehen = gestanden Put the sep. prefix on to the front of gestanden to give aufgestanden. The Perfect Tense of aufstehen = ich bin aufgestanden (verb takes sein)

Give the Perfect Tense of: To arrive I arrived – I have arrived

To arrive – ankommen* v irreg sep Look up Past Participle of kommen = gekommen. Add the separable prefix: an Answer: ich bin angekommen

Jetzt bist du dran! To stop (halt) I stopped – I have stopped

anhalten* v irreg sep Ich bin angehalten

Jetzt bist du dran! To record on tape I recorded on taped – I have recorded on tape

aufnehmen v irreg sep Ich habe aufgenommen

Jetzt bist du dran! To take off (clothes) I took off my clothes I have taken my clothes off

ausziehen v irreg sep Ich habe ausgezogen
